When Anton and I built Ireland’s first commercial Bee Bed House, there were no detailed construction manuals, no proven Bee Bed plans and very few people anywhere in the world who could answer our questions. Every design decision had to be researched, tested, refined and, quite often, learned the hard way.
Looking back, we’re actually grateful for that journey because every mistake became a lesson, and every improvement made our second Bee Bed dramatically better than our first.

One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that a Bee Bed is simply a timber cabin with a few beehives underneath.
In reality, the building itself is only one piece of a much bigger picture.

Our first Bee Bed taught us something that every builder should know. It is almost always cheaper to spend another week planning than to spend another month rebuilding. The improvements we made before constructing our second Bee Bed saved time, reduced maintenance and created a far better experience for our visitors.
Most builders naturally begin by thinking about timber sizes, roof construction and foundations.
We started somewhere completely different.
Before we cut the first piece of timber, we asked ourselves one simple question.
How do we want people to feel when they walk into this Bee Bed?
That single question shaped almost every decision that followed.
Where should the observation hives be positioned?
How much room does a visitor need to lie comfortably?
How can maintenance be carried out without disturbing the experience?
How can the bees remain healthy while guests enjoy the incredible sound surrounding them?
Once we understood the experience we wanted to create, the design of the cabin became much easier.
People often assume the observation hives will be the highlight of a Bee Bed.
They’re certainly unforgettable.
But after welcoming many visitors, we’ve found that one feature consistently leaves the deepest impression.
The sound.
Thousands of healthy honey bees working naturally together create a gentle, living sound that cannot be reproduced by speakers or recordings.
It is calming, immersive and completely authentic.
This is one of the reasons we recommend designing Bee Beds around strong, full-sized colonies rather than relying on just one or two small hives.
Healthy colonies don’t simply produce more bees.
They help create the atmosphere that makes a Bee Bed feel truly alive.
Many people searching for Bee Bed plans focus almost entirely on the construction. In reality, successful Bee Beds are designed around the experience first. The construction simply becomes the tool that brings that experience to life.
Every successful Bee Bed begins long before construction starts. While most people immediately begin thinking about timber, roofing and foundations, we’ve learned that the most important decisions are actually made during the planning stage.
The reality is that a Bee Bed is a working beehive, a comfortable relaxation space and, for many people, an unforgettable visitor experienceโall combined into one carefully designed cabin.
That means every design decision should serve three purposes:
the bees, the beekeeper and the visitor.
Never start building simply because you’re excited. The more time you spend planning your Bee Bed, the less time you’ll spend rebuilding it later.
One of the biggest improvements we made between our first and second Bee Bed was designing around full-size production hives.
It’s easy to assume that smaller hives will be easier to manage or easier to fit into a cabin, but our experience showed the opposite.
Healthy, full-sized colonies generally require less unnecessary intervention, create a richer atmosphere and produce a much more immersive sound inside the Bee Bed.
Rather than trying to squeeze bees into the available space, we recommend designing the cabin around the hives from the very beginning.
Many first-time builders underestimate how much maintenance smaller hive systems can create. Designing for full-size colonies from the outset can make management easier while creating a stronger Bee Bed experience.
For many visitors, the observation hives become the highlight of the entire experience.
Watching thousands of honey bees safely carrying out their daily work creates a level of fascination that photographs and videos simply cannot reproduce.
People can watch foraging bees returning with pollen, workers caring for brood and the incredible organisation of a thriving colonyโall while remaining completely separated from the bees.
Observation hives don’t simply educate people.
They create a connection with bees that many visitors have never experienced before.
A Bee Bed should immediately feel welcoming.
When planning your cabin, think about the largest person who might use itโnot just yourself.
A spacious bed, generous headroom and enough room to move naturally all contribute to a better experience.
Comfort may not seem like an important construction decision, but it’s often the detail visitors remember most after they’ve left.
If you’re already investing the time and money to build a Bee Bed, don’t compromise on space. A slightly larger cabin and comfortable beds will improve the experience for every future visitor.
One lesson we learned very early was that the internal layout influences almost every part of the Bee Bed.

Construction is only half of the project. The real success of a Bee Bed comes from creating an atmosphere that visitors have never experienced before.
When people walk through the door they should immediately feel that they’ve entered somewhere unique. Every decision made during construction should contribute towards that feeling.
Don’t think of your Bee Bed as a building. Think of it as an experience. Every construction decision should improve what your visitors hear, see, smell and feel.
One of the biggest improvements we made between our first and second Bee Bed was the ventilation system.
During the summer months, strong honey bee colonies naturally generate warmth. While this contributes to the unique atmosphere inside the Bee Bed, it also means fresh air must circulate efficiently.
Many first-time builders only think about ventilation once the cabin has already been completed. By then, making changes can be difficult and expensive.
Instead, ventilation should be part of the original design. Well-positioned windows, insect screens and carefully planned airflow create a far more comfortable environment while allowing the bees to remain undisturbed.
Many Bee Bed builders focus entirely on the hive design and forget that people may spend forty minutes or more relaxing inside the cabin. Fresh air is just as important as good construction.
Good insulation improves comfort throughout the year and helps create a more stable internal environment.
It keeps the cabin comfortable during cooler weather while reducing excessive heat build-up during warmer periods.
More importantly, insulation contributes to creating a peaceful environment where visitors can completely relax without outside distractions.
It’s another example of a construction detail that people rarely notice directly, but they certainly notice the overall feeling it creates.
People don’t travel to experience a Bee Bed because it’s simply another wooden cabin.
They come because it’s something they’ve never experienced before.
The gentle sound of thousands of honey bees, the warmth generated by healthy colonies, the sight of bees working inside observation hives and the natural aromas of wax, propolis and honey all combine to create something genuinely unforgettable.
When these elements work together, visitors stop looking at their phones, slow down and become completely absorbed in the world of the honey bee.
Don’t build your Bee Bed around what is easiest to construct. Build it around what people will remember years later. Those memories are what make Bee Beds so special.
When we compare our first Bee Bed with the one we operate today, it’s not the appearance that changed the most.
Almost every improvement was made to create a better experience for both the bees and the people visiting them.
Better hive layouts reduced maintenance.
Improved ventilation increased comfort.
Larger beds suited a wider range of visitors.
Observation hives became more engaging.
Additional colonies created a richer, more immersive sound.
None of those improvements happened by accident. They came from listening to guests, observing how the bees behaved and constantly asking ourselves one question:
“How can we make this experience even better?”
That philosophy continues to guide everything we teach inside The Bee Beds Academy.
Looking back at our first Bee Bed, it’s easy to see all the things we would do differently today.
At the time, we had no detailed Bee Bed plans, no Bee Bed blueprints and no experienced builders to learn from. Every improvement came from practical experience, listening to our visitors and constantly refining the design.
While we keep the complete construction process for our Academy students, we’d like to share three lessons that made the biggest difference to our own Bee Beds.
Our first instinct was to keep the hive system as compact as possible.
It seemed logical. Smaller hives would surely be easier to build around.
We quickly discovered the opposite.
Smaller colonies generally required more attention, produced a less immersive sound and simply didn’t create the same impact that healthy, full-sized colonies could produce.
Today we design our Bee Beds around full-size production hives because they benefit both the beekeeper and the visitor experience.
Healthy honey bee colonies naturally generate warmth, especially during the busiest months of the season.
Without proper airflow, the cabin can become far less comfortable than you intended.
Rather than treating ventilation as something to think about later, we now consider it one of the very first design decisions.
Good airflow allows visitors to relax comfortably while maintaining an excellent environment for the bees themselves.
When you’re designing something for yourself, it’s very easy to overlook the needs of other people.
Over the years we’ve welcomed visitors of all ages, heights and backgrounds.
That experience taught us to think beyond ourselves.
Comfortable beds, generous space, well-positioned observation hives and an intuitive cabin layout make an enormous difference to how people experience a Bee Bed.
